Your day by Lake Jeris begins, when you arrive at the private shores of Jari. Take the short walk (50m) to the water, where we shall take the boat to see the Keimiöniemi fishing huts. They are located only few minutes away. Your host, the master story-teller Jari describes you the past and present of the lake and the fishing huts. Jari’s family has lived by Lake Jeris in Keimiöniemi since the 1830s and fishing has always been a central part of life both as a source of livelihood and for household needs.
We shall return to Jari's private shore, where you will learn the secrets of traditional seine fishing. Now you can yourself experience how the family has lived and fished for centuries. The seine is taken to the lake on two boats and thrown into the water. There is room for some fishermen on the boats and the rest can enjoy the majestic fell scenery on a rowing boat. You can also admire the scenery from the shore sitting by a open fire.
The seine is then slowly reeled to shore and of course you will have a chance to guess the amount of fish. The best guess will be rewarded as soon as the seine reaches the shore. The silvery whitefish are immediately gutted, a skill, which also you you can learn. You will be taught by a local professional fisherman. While the whitefish are being smoked you can go for a swim in the lake or pet the the family’s cat and the dog.
As soon as the whitefish have turned deliciously copper in the smoke oven it is time for the meal. Traditionally you eat the whitefish with your fingers and as a dessert you will enjoy coffee made by the open fire accompanied with a delicious blueberry pie. Picked by the family! You will hear storiens about the exciting local legends told by the master story-teller.
